Anti-Cruelty Society

The Anti-Cruelty Society

System: Ceramic Carpet Plus
Certified Installer: Artlow Systems

The Anti-Cruelty Society in downtown Chicago receives approximately 16,000 animals per year. On any given day there can be as many as 300 dogs and cats in the facility. Chris Martin, the Physical Plant Manager, has the responsibility for maintaining this facility. His primary concerns are having a safe and clean facility to house these animals as well as having a flooring system which stands up to the rigors of this environment.

The Anti-Cruelty Society's relationship with General Polymers began in 1994 when Artlow Systems installed the first of four phases of Ceramic Carpet Plus System. Chris explained, "We were very pleased with the initial Ceramic Carpet Plus Flooring system which was installed in the Dog Adoption Room." Since the initial area was installed, The Anti-Cruelty Society has put General Polymers' Flooring systems in the Cat Adoption Room, Receiving Room and most recently in the Stray Dog Room. In total, there is approximately 10,000 ft2 of General Polymers Ceramic Carpet Plus in the Anti-Cruelty Society facility.

The public frequently tours the facility so having a flooring system, which is easy to clean and maintain, is a necessity. "General Polymers' Ceramic Carpet flooring system gave us the cleanest flooring system for the dollar," according to Chris Martin. Due to the uniform finish and integral cove to wall transition, seamless epoxy flooring systems are easier to clean and maintain than other commercial choices, such as tile, vinyl sheet goods and carpet. The grout joints in tile floors can create areas where dirt and bacteria will collect. Carpets are not recommended for wet environments because they absorb moisture and will harbor microorganisms and mold. Chris Martins added, "For those areas where there is heavy soil or build up, you can go back and clean with a brush. When we do this, it makes the floor look as good as it did when it was first installed. There is no staining or scratching."

Another advantage to General Polymers Ceramic Carpet Plus flooring systems is the variety of colors available. "Color options were important when making the original flooring selection. General Polymers made it easy for us to avoid extremely light colors," said Chris Martin. General Polymers has 12 standard color combinations and a capability to produce near limitless selection of special color combinations.

An antimicrobial additive is incorporated into the Ceramic Carpet Plus flooring system. Chris explained that they already had a flooring system that was easy to maintain and durable. The use of the antimicrobial additive has helped to control the odor associated with the presense of microorganisms.
